I Dare You Articulation! {app review & giveaway}

OK. It's the LAST few weeks of school. If you're like me you're making tons of summer recommendations  I've got a new one for you. I Dare You Articulation is the newest app develop by Erik X. Raj. This app is amazing summer homework for the school based SLP crowd!

The app features several sounds (seen above) at the sentence level.

Select a sound and then select the position of the word.

The student will scroll through child-friendly dates that get your kids up and moving while saying their target words at the sentence reading level.

Pros: The app is currently listed as $4.99. The price and the premise make it an ideal app to have students  download for homework! I have already sent the link to two of my parents!

Cons: The app doesn't take data, a feature SLPs might be used to for therapy.

Overall this app is 100% likely to make your students giggle! Enter to win a copy of the app below! Erik is also throwing in a $10 gift card

Syllable Splash {App Review & Giveaway}

Syllable Splash is the latest app from Smarty Ears. As you might have guessed by the name, it's an ocean themed app targeting phonological awareness skills of syllable segmenting.

The app is designed with preschool- kindergarten students in mind. The game contains hundreds of images of 1-4 syllable words.

Get set up by adding students with pictures or avatars.  Edit your settings including how many foils are added and the type of syllables to include.

To play the students are prompted with an image and asked to identify how many syllables it has. My students favorite part was the shark eating their wrong answer. Which might have led to a few extra mistakes on purpose!

Data is collected throughout the app and visible with options to share/print.

Cons: The syllable numbers at the bottom are mixed in the app. When playing with 4 options, I really wish they stayed labeled 1-4 across the bottom. The confusion of the out of order numbers was difficult with some of my students.

Pros: This app can be used to target a lot of phonological awareness goals. We used the same words to target rhyme and alliteration too! The app has a built in feature that increases difficulty automatically if selected. So if they answer 10 correct in a row, the app adds another foil.

The app is currently listed for $9.99 in itunes. If you'd like to win a free copy, please use rafflecopter to enter to win!

Disclosure Statement: Speech Room News was provided a copy of this app for review. No other compensation was provided.

Lemonade Attributes Game

This sweet and sour lemonade game challenges students to think critically and match 4 attributes with a given object. Each lemonade stand lists an item(16 included). Students work to match a pitcher, spoon, lemon and money for each given item. This can be tricky because there are multiple items that have similar attributes (ie: two fruits). If you loved my Plant Your Garden attribute game, you'll love this one too!

Directions:
1. Print all pages. Laminate and cut apart all materials.
2. Spread out lemonade stands across the table and divide between students.
3. Have students read the descriptors on the lemonade materials to find the right matches for each stand.

4. Self check each stand by checking for one of each item (lemon, pitcher, spoon, money).
5. As student make matches, consider that a ‘sale’ at their stand! Keep score on the included ‘my sales’ sheet. Student can write 25 cents for each sale or use plastic coins.

The download includes 16 lemonade stands and 64 matching attributes. You can purchase this 15 page set on TpT here, or you can enter to win it for free below!

Back in my day.... Part 1

As part of my celebration of Better Hearing and Speech Month, a blog reader, Connie Ziko, is sharing some of her old speech therapy materials. It's clear I'm still a newby in this field. I have colorful fun decks and clipart galore. Many of you started speech therapy a few decades ago with a whole different set of treatment materials. Connie is taking us back in time to look at some old material sets that are still hanging around at her place of employment!

When I accepted my first SLP job I used this language kit. It was a standard "in my day". There were 3 kits . This green kit was intended for 4 1/2 to 6 1/2 years of age.

This kit was copyrighted in 1965 and published by the American Guidance Service (AGS). An updated kit is now published by Pearson.

In the kit : 180 daily lessons in a spiral bound manual.
                 430 colored cards in 13 different categories .( Not real photos)
                 10 extra large poster scenes.
                 350 plastic colored clips .
                 2 puppets
                1 reel to reel tape with 6 narrated fairy tales .

(Check out that TV on the card :))

 The lessons were not intended to "replace the regular activities" in the daily classroom. The lessons have been planned to "provide repetition "in the oral language program. If you take a look at the activities on the lesson that is pictured some of the same tenets still hold true.

That was AWESOME! Ok, am I the only one thankful for voice recorders, ipads and youtube? Stay tuned for more pictures from Connie! If you have photos of some 'Back in My Day' materials, please submit them to speechroomnews@gmail.com.

Grillin' Syllables {with giveaway}

One of the best parts of summer? The grill! I've got a ton of kiddos working on multisyllabic words so I whipped this game up! Time for Grillin' Syllables

Grillin' Syllables is a new game for speech therapy targeting multisyllabic articulation of words. I developed a new game targeting these 3-5 syllable words featuring the summer grill theme!

78 multisyllabic words with pictures are included.

Print all food cards. Print each student one game board (page 3). Use blank cards to include student specific learning targets. Laminate all materials, but most importantly the student game boards.

Give each student one game board and one dry erase marker. Place the cards in the center of the group.

On each turn, the student should pull a card from the center pile. Read the multisyllable word. Check the included grill food at the top of the card and mark that item off on your game board.

If you draw a special ‘burnt it!’ card, lose a turn.

The student who first covers all their grill items is the game winner.

Download it on TpT and don't forget to leave feedback if you grab it! I'm giving away 2 free copies - just enter on rafflecopter below!

Bumparena {a favorite find}

I have been meaning to share this game with you all year. Do you have a go-to therapy game? This is definitely one of my top 5 of the year. My second through fifth graders LOVE it.

Bumparena is a Cranium Game where 2+ players work to get the most balls into their goal. Students guide the balls into their goal by strategically placing bumpers on the board.

Students pull cards and follow the directions, adding different bumpers and balls to the board. If you draw a 'release now' card, let all the balls roll and see where they land!

We used these cards a  lot of different ways. For articulation, the students produced 5 sentences before taking a turn. For language, we paired it with the Expanding Expression Tool. The colors in the game cards are close enough to those in the EET strand.  When I pull a card, the student completes that portion of the EET strand. For example, when they pull a green bumper card, they first identify the category of a given object.

I love to see the reasoning skills in the students and they love to play with the bouncy balls!

The game was made in 2005 so you might have trouble finding it in store. Luckily you can always find it on Amazon!

Have you used Bumparena?
